1. With US size 10 straight needles and TWO of your favorite knitting worsted yarn, cast on 73 stitches with main color.
2. Work in crocus buds pattern for 8 rows, as follows:
Row 1 (right side): k3, (yo, k2) across.
Row 2: p4, with left needle bring 3rd stitch on right needle over first 2 stitches and off needle, (p3, with left needle bring 3rd stitch on right needle over first 2 stitches and off needle) across.
Row 3: (k2, yo) across to last stitch, k1.
Row 4: (p3, with left needle bring 3rd stitch on right needle over first 2 stitches and off needle) across p1.
3. With right side facing you, begin shaping top of hat as follows:
Row 1: k across; 73 stitches remain on needle.
Row 2: p across.
Row 3: (k2, k2tog) 18 times, k1; 55 stitches remain on needle.
Row 4: p across.
Row 5: (k2, k2tog) 6 times, k7, (k2tog, k2) 6 times; 43 stitches remain on needle.
Row 6: p across.
Row 7: (k2, k2tog) 5 times, k3, (k2tog, k2) 5 times; 33 stitches remain on needle.
Row 8: p across.
Row 9: (k2, k2tog) 4 times, k1, (k2tog, k2) 4 times; 25 stitches remain on needle.
Row 10: p across.
Row 11: (k2, k2tog) 3 times, k1, (k2tog, k2) 3 times; 19 stitches remain on needle.
Row 12: p across.
Row 13: (k2, k2tog) 2 times, k3, (k2tog, k2) 2 times; 15 stitches remain on needle.
Row 14: p across.
4. Cut yarn, leaving about 14" tail, and thread onto bodkin needle.
5. Run threaded bodkin needle through remaining 14 stitches, slipping them off knitting needle.
6. Pull yarn snug to gather top of hat together.
7. Tack seams at top of hat to hold in place, then continue to weave seam together.
NOTE 1: Depending on how you cast-on, there may be a tail remaining. If som thread it onto bodkin needle and work through seam from bottom up to hide loose end.
NOTE 2: Increase crocus buds pattern to 36 rows, if longer hat is desired.
