1. With US size 10 straight needles and your favorite knitting worsted yarn, cast on 73 stitches.
2. Work in little tent pattern for 40 rows, as follows:
Row 1 (wrong side): k2, p5, (k3, p5) across, k2.
Row 2: k2, slip 5 as if to purl with yarn held loosely in front, (k3, slip 5) across, k2.
Row 3: k2, p5, (k3, p5) across, k2.
Row 4: k4, inserting needle under loose strand and knit next stitch, then pull under strand, (k7, inserting needle under loose strand and knit next stitch, then pull under strand) across to last 4 stitchs, k4.
3. With wrong side facing you, begin shaping top of hat as follows:
Row 1: k2, p5, (k3, p5) across to last 2 stitches, k2.
Row 2: k2, (k2tog, k1, k2tog, k3) across, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k2; 55 stitches remain on needle.
Row 3: k2, p3, (k3, p3) across, k2.
Row 4: k2, (k3tog, k3) across, k3tog, k2; 37 stitches remain on needle.
Row 5: k2, (p1, k3) across, p1, k2.
Row 6: k3, (k3tog, k1) across, k3; 21 stitches remain on needle.
Row 7: k2, (p1, k1) across, p1, k2.
Row 8: k2tog (5 times), k1, k2tog (5 times); 11 stitches remain on needle.
Row 9: p across.
4. Cut yarn, leaving about 14" tail, and thread onto bodkin needle.
5. Run threaded bodkin needle through remaining 14 stitches, slipping them off knitting needle.
6. Pull yarn snug to gather top of hat together.
7. Tack seams at top of hat to hold in place, then continue to weave seam together.
NOTE 1: Depending on how you cast-on, there may be a tail remaining. If som thread it onto bodkin needle and work through seam from bottom up to hide loose end.
NOTE 2: Increase little tent pattern to 48 rows, if longer hat is desired.
